Join Sylvia Legris & Sheri Benning to celebrate their joint book launch.
Garden Physic is a paean to the pleasures and delights of one of the world’s most cherished pastimes: Gardening! From an imagined love-letter exchange on plants between garden designer Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson to a painting by Agnes Martin to the medicinal discourse of the first century Greek pharmacologist Pedanius Dioscorides, Legris’ poems map the garden as body and the body as garden, her language with a compressed vitality reminiscent of Louis Zukofsky’s 80 Flowers.
Sylvia Legris’ previous collections include The Hideous Hidden, Pneumatic Antiphonal, and Nerve Squall. Among her awards are the Griffin Poetry Prize, the Pat Lowther Award, the Cheryl & Henry Kloppenburg Award, and the Victor Martin Lynch-Staunton Award for outstanding achievement by a mid-career writer.
Field Requiem (Carcanet Press) bears witness to the violence inherent in the shift to industrialised farming in prairie Canada…The poems give voice to the affective consequences of loss brought on by climate change and factory farming and renew a sense of locality in the teeth of corporate farming practices.
Sheri Benning grew up on a farm in central Saskatchewan, Canada. She’s the author of Field Requiem and The Season’s Vagrant Light: New & Selected Poems both published by Carcanet Press, as well as Thin Moon Psalm (Brick Books) and Earth After Rain (Thistledown Press). Her work has appeared in North American, British and European journals and anthologies, most recently The Paris Review, Times Literary Supplement, Poetry Review, Brick, PN Review and Grain.
The event will begin at 7pm in Saskatchewan, and 8pm EST. Register here.
