Saigyo

Saigyo (1118–1190), born Sato Norikiyo, was a Japanese poet. While still young, he worked as a guard to Emperor Toba, then retired, but at the age of twenty-two he quit to become a monk. He later took the pen name “Saigyo,” meaning Western Journey.
